About Pete Martin
Pete Martin spent three years studying the fastest-growing bootstrapped companies in America. Starting with 32,000+ Inc. 5000 companies as his dataset, he narrowed to the top 1% — 324 companies growing 149% per year without outside capital. He conducted 100+ interviews with their CEOs and leadership teams, scraped and analyzed all 324 companies and their primary competitors, and identified the 5 patterns that separated them from everyone else.

The Research
After 25+ years of building and advising businesses, Pete noticed a pattern: the advice given to bootstrapped companies was almost always borrowed from venture-backed playbooks. But bootstrapped companies face fundamentally different constraints — no runway, no safety net, and every dollar of growth has to be funded from operations.
So Pete asked a simple question: What do the fastest-growing bootstrapped companies actually do differently? Not in theory. Not based on anecdotes. Based on data.
He started with the Inc. 5000 — the most comprehensive dataset of fast-growing American companies. His starting dataset was 32,000+ companies over multiple years. He filtered to bootstrapped-only, and reverse-engineered the top 1% — the 324 companies he calls the fastest-growing bootstrapped companies. He then conducted 100+ in-depth interviews with their CEOs and leadership teams across 26 industries, scraped and analyzed all 324 companies and their primary competitors, to see (and do) what everyone else missed.
The result was clear: five patterns — the 5 growth drivers — appeared consistently across the top 1% of fastest-growing bootstrapped companies, regardless of industry, geography, or business model. These patterns became the Bootscaling methodology, published in Scale Up Faster to help you see what's been invisible from the inside.
